Description

Epictetus is among the most engaging philosophers of antiquity. His Discourses are deeply Socratic in tone, method, and spirit, and the Encheiridion is a rousing call to live up to the standards of his philosophy. The aim of this course is to introduce students to Epictetus’ philosophy and style of teaching. We will read select discourses and excerpts of the Encheiridion, occasionally consulting Simplicius’ Commentary and other texts when relevant.
